Art Exhibits, Hobo Tunnels, and Rubens

This was a fun week! I did a lot of new things and ate some delicious food! This week was really slow in the class department,  we only had school Tuesday through Thursday!

The week started with a visit to the Louvre and Musee des Arts Decoratifs with our Decorative Arts professor. We looked at a different types of furnishings, as well as decorative objects. Very interesting. The professor has been a curator for over 40 years, so he is so knowledgeable about everything and very interesting to listen to.

On Thursday, after school, we all went to support our class mate by visiting her exhibit and capstone project! The concept was super cool and interactive. They set a up a gallery that was completely dark of photographs taken by a local artist. The photos were developed in a way that when you shined a black light on them, they glowed and lit up the gallery. It was a really cool and interactive concept. Congrats to them for an awesome job!

On Friday, I went to Notre Dame. I haven't been to Notre Dame since I've been here, so I decided to stop by. I love the area around the church, so I always go and sit and people watch before stopping by Shakespeare and Co., the English bookstore across the Seine.

On Saturday, I met up with Marion and some of her friends! We hung out for a while and had some drinks at her friend's flat before we went to a Korean BBQ place! If you've never been to one of these places before, it's pretty cool. They bring you a plate of meat and you cook it on these little grills built in the table. After we went to the restaurant, Marion, Vincent, and I headed to Grand Palais. Saturday was Nuit Blanche, which is an annual Parisian arts festival. A lot of the museums had late night hours, some were open all night. Before we could get to the metro, we had to go through a very scary Hobo Tunnel. You know it's going to be bad when someone tells you "Don't worry, this is creepy during the day too". That's very reassuring when you're walking around at midnight. Thankfully we had Vincent with us to keep the hobos away. We made it through the tunnel and then passed a lovely toilet full of trash in the middle of the sidewalk. This, my friends, is the not so fluffy Parisian side of Paris. I guess it's good to bring you back to earth sometimes, between the éclairs and walks down the river bank while looking at the Eiffel Tower. (Marion, since it was your suggestion to include this, the photo section of this post is dedicated to you) Unfortunately, when we got to Grand Palais, after braving the Hobo Tunnel and beautiful sidewalk art, it was CLOSED. Even though their Facebook said they were open all night. Cute.
Oh and side note to this evening, I got home at about 2:30. Everything was fun until I went to plug some stuff into my power strip to charge, and I tripped the breaker and shut off the power to my whole flat. It was casual. Thankfully, my Daddy is a rock star and helped me switch it back on via Facetime.

Yesterday all of our classed got cancelled,  so I met up with my friend Yuling at Musee du Luxembourg. We saw a beautiful exhibit of Ruben paintings. I loved this exhibit as he is one of my favorite painters. They had his very famous self portrait along with a whole collection of portraits he painted for the royal families in France, Spain, and Flanders. After we left the museum, we walked around Jardin du Luxembourg, which looked picturesque and perfect with all the fall colors, had lunch at a very cute sidewalk cafe and then lastly visited Sainte Chapelle. This is my all time favorite church in Paris. It's a stained glass cathedral. It takes my breath away every single time.

Here are a few pictures from my week!!

This first picture is from my visit to the Decorative Arts museum. Our professor told us that their exhibit concept was that they wanted it to look like all the furniture was in a catalogue. We thought it looked like the show room at Ikea where they have one of everything out for you to look at.

Here is a picture of me after going to the exhibit. The little street was too picturesque to pass up on the photo-op.

As per Marion's request, here is the not so cute toilet in the street we saw just before we went into the sketchy tunnel. She told me that I had to include it in my blog, so here it is! Paris isn't always pretty walks along the Seine. There are weirdos and vandals everywhere.

Here is the Rubens self portrait from the exhibit! His paintings are incredible. They all look like photographs.

Lastly, here is a picture from Sainte Chapelle. The photo doesn't do it justice, but at least it gives you an idea as to how incredible this place is.

A New Week, a New Update!

Hey everyone! If you're reading this, you weren't bored to tears by my last post and decided to give this blog another try. Thanks for stopping by! This week was a very busy one. The first full week of classes went really well, but boy, were the days long! We had classes every day from 9:30 to 6, with one day going until 8. I think I've gone to at least one session of everything for the semester (our schedule isn't the same every week, we go to similar style courses in blocks), and I think Art History is going to be my favorite, with Cultural Economics as a close second. This week, we went on another Louvre visit to look at Renaissance Masters' works for Art History, which was a lot of fun! We also had our first retail visit. On Friday, we went to Bucherer,  a watch retailer near Opéra that's been open since 1888, to learn about their business model and retail strategies. This was for the Luxury portion of my degree, for anyone who is confused about me visit...

A Bit of an Introduction

My name is Sara. I'm 26 and originally from Houston, Texas. I have a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Texas A&M and an MBA in Art and Luxury Management from IESA Paris. I've spent the past two years of my life studying and living in Paris, France. I love art, traveling, yoga, fortress walls, and truffle pasta. Expat life, so far, has been my best life. This blog was originally created to chronicle my time at school in Paris, but as you can see, I got a life and stopped posting weekly updates (who has time for that when you live in Paris?!). Now that I'm done with business school, I've decided to give this travel blog thing a go. I hope you learn something from my posts- whether it be where to get the best gelato in Paris or how to overcome the anxiety of making new friends in a foreign country or what to skip if you only have a weekend to spend in London. I get asked all the time about travel related things, so I've decided to dust off the cob web...

Fashion Week, Rose Shaped Gelato, and Room Temp Eggs

This past week was another good one! I'm very pleased with how smoothly everything has been going. My week at school was really good, I went on several museum trips (one ended with me fainting in the Louvre, but every day can't be perfect. Also, I'm fine) This past week was Paris Fashion week, which basically means that the city is busier than normal and all the fun places are blocked off for runway tents and VIP only areas. On Thursday, one of my friends from school invited me to a little event in the Marais for her boyfriend's shop. It was really fun, complete with adorable puppies, French wine, of course, a lot of good conversation with lovely new people. I had a great time! On Friday, a friend and I had intended to meet at the Decorative Arts museum, which is on the back side of the Louvre, but we couldn't get in because of the obnoxiously long 3 HOUR QUEUE. The museum is also exhibiting a collection of Dior cloths, so EVERYONE and their grandma was in line....
